We at KARL LAGERFELD are passionate about sustainability and having this as a core value of our brand. We developed our KARL CARES strategy to affirm our purpose to be the best version of ourselves and embrace our need to build a better future for people and the planet.



KARL LAGERFELD CEO, Pier Paolo Righi, says, “We are a group of like-minded people working passionately. Today, I see a team that has embraced this idea of caring. And you cannot intrinsically care about people unless you care about the planet and how you work, live, and treat each other.” 

 

The KARL CARES strategy exemplifies this culture of caring at KARL LAGERFELD and our vision to consistently challenge and improve how we take responsibility for people and the planet. When KARL LAGERFELD signed onto the Fashion Pact in 2019, we were one of the first signatories of the global coalition. We have committed to set science-based targets to act against global warming, restore biodiversity, and protect the oceans.

 

We embrace these pressing global challenges and know there is no better time to start than the present, and there is nowhere to go but the future. We invited longtime KARL friend, model, and sustainability activist, Amber Valletta to inspire us on our path as Sustainability Ambassador. Amber Valletta brings her insight, passion, and knowledge to our sustainability journey. KARL LAGERFELD CEO Pier Paolo Righi says, “Working with Amber has pushed us to think outside of the box, even more, when it comes to innovation and design.”

 

With tremendous enthusiasm, we established an internal cross-functional team with a representative from each department in the company. This team works together to integrate sustainability into their unique area of expertise, work hand-in-hand, and ignite change throughout our company to meet our KARL CARES goals. As Amber says, “Great style doesn’t have to be at the expense of sustainability.”

Our KARL CARES approach focuses on three pillars, PEOPLE, PLANET, and PARTNER.

 

Caring for people means we aim to offer safe, healthy, and fair working conditions to the workers in our value chain. Our Code of Conduct is the foundation for this. We became members of Amfori BSCI to reaffirm our commitment and continuously monitor and improve our impacts in line with our Code of Conduct.

 

Caring for our planet means meeting the Fashion Pact goals, including a commitment to reduce our environmental impact to net-zero by 2050. We introduced the green KARL CARES hangtag to help customers identify our products made with a minimum of 50% more sustainable materials, including recycled materials, organic, responsible, Leather Working Group medal rate, regenerative, in-conversion, and bio-based materials. At the same time, we are taking the necessary steps to reduce our energy consumption and Green House Gas emissions. Each day, we work in our innovative Amsterdam KARL LAGERFELD headquarters, which has been renovated to have a minimal environmental impact.

Caring for our partners means we drive positive impact by engaging and empowering our employees, communities, customers, and partners to make more conscious decisions. We are committed to collaboration because we understand that to drive meaningful change at scale, we must establish long-lasting relationships with our partners and work together with our peers.
